The plot of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie is being kept tightly under wraps. However, given the cast involved, it seems likely to ultimately involve a battle between multiple heroes and Doctor Doom. Such a battle figured prominently in the latest chapter of the One World Under Doom event, and one Fantastic Four member’s power upgrade could foreshadow how that battle might be won in the MCU.

Written by Ryan North with art by R. B. Silva, One World Under Doom #7 continues the tale of Doctor Doom’s conquest of Earth. Between his inventions and his claiming the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, Doom has easily countered multiple challenges from the Fantastic Four. This leads the team, partnering with the Avengers and X-Men, to launch one final attack.

Naturally, Doctor Doom predicted this and had spells in place to counter the heroes. He also predicted that his archenemy, Reed Richards, would use the battle as a distraction from his own final salvo. However, the sworn enemy of the Fantastic Four did not predict exactly what Mister Fantastic would create to stop him once and for all.
What did Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards create to take on Doctor Doom?
In the midst of the battle, Doctor Doom suddenly found himself on the Astral Plane. Mr. Fantastic was there waiting for him. He confirmed that the only advantage Doom had over him was that he understood magic, and Reed, ever the logician, couldn’t stretch his brain around it. However, he was able to observe the magic Doom employed and break it down on a scientific level. This led him to create his own form of science-based magic.

Doctor Doom acknowledged that accessing the Astral Plane without true psychic gifts was an astounding feat. However, Richards’ plan suffered from one fatal flaw. His magical science was based upon the study of spells that Doom had created. As such, Doom was intimately familiar with their structure. And as a result of that, Doom had already calculated his own counters to those spells should they be used against him.
While the Fantastic Four leader’s gambit fails in One World Under Doom, the battle could foretell how a similar battle might be won in Avengers: Doomsday. It seems likely a similar showdown will ultimately come down to a fight between Mister Fantastic and Doctor Doom. In that event, Richards will need some kind of unexpected edge if he is to win over his greatest foe.
