Bane was designed to be the ultimate Batman villain. Beyond being more physically imposing, he was blessed with a keen and analytical mind that was almost the equal of Bruce Wayne’s. The Absolute Universe version of Bane cut an equally fearsome figure when he was first introduced. However, Absolute Batman #11 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta unveils just how the man who “broke the Bat” was changed for the new setting and how he’s more dangerous than ever.
The issue opens with a flashback as soldier of fortune Alfred Pennyworth recalls what he learned of Bane. It is clear that this version of Bane is a more formidable figure physically, towering over even the muscular Absolute Batman, However, Alfred recalls that Bane’s powers are not merely physical.
The Venom formula of the Absolute Universe is not simply a super-steroid. It enhances the mind as well as the body, granting the user an enhanced memory. This has given Bane a far greater knowledge base than even the Absolute Batman possesses. Horrifyingly, he is apparently the hero’s physical and intellectual superior in this reality.
How Absolute Batman changes Bane’s origin
In the original DC Universe, Bane was sentenced to life in prison as a child for the crimes of his father. He grew to manhood in the fearsome prison Peña Duro, before becoming a test subject for the Venom formula. The strength Venom gave him, couple with his brilliant mind, allowed him to escape Peña Duro. He then sought out Batman to prove himself stronger than the fear of bats he had as a child.
Absolute Batman #11 changes this up, with Bane growing up alongside his revolutionary father. They were both part of a band of freedom fighters sent to Peña Duro. Another change is that Bane does not gain access to Venom until after he escaped from prison.
The biggest change, however, is that Absolute Bane is somehow connected to the Absolute Universe version of The Joker. The reclusive billionaire is on the beach waiting for Bane when he escapes and speaks with him privately, somehow knowing him by name. What he says to Bane is unknown, but it is enough to make him kill his own father and become an infamous mercenary afterward.
