Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 Review: Entertaining Crossover Delivers Action

Some ideas do not require description beyond the title. Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe is such an idea.

Earlier this year, the King of the Monsters encountered Marvel Comics heroes ranging from the Fantastic Four to the X-Men. Most of these stories found them ultimately uniting against a common enemy. This time, however, Godzilla is firmly in the antagonist role. As such, the stakes are higher, and Marvel and Toho have upped the ante appropriately.

The issue opens with Mole Man testing a new weapon. The bad news is he accidentally awakens Godzilla in the process. The worse news is that Godzilla’s awakening also disturbs the Celestial at rest deep within the Earth.

Before the Fantastic Four can respond, they are caught in the middle of a battle between the King of the Monsters and the Celestial. The more immediate problem, however, is ensuring that the people of Manhattan survive the immediate conflict. This leads to Reed Richards and Black Panther attempting to reverse-engineer Mole Man’s weapon, as the Avengers struggle to contain the damage.

Gerry Duggan understands the heroes of Marvel better than most. He also knows what it takes to write an engaging action sequence. Virtually all of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 is one big running battle. However, Duggan also finds time for little character moments and a fair bit of comedy as the battle runs on. This keeps the action from getting stale, even as we get answers to questions of great import to comic readers. For instance, can Captain America‘s shield block Godzilla’s atomic breath?

Javier Garrón epically illustrates the proceedings with an appropriately animated aesthetic. There are some character expressions which look more appropriate to a comedic manga than an intense action comic. This only adds to the humor, however, though there are some places where Godzilla looks more cartoonish than horrific.

Despite some stray panels where the art conflicts with the horror of the moment, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 is everything franchise fans might hope for. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fight a war of attrition against the King of the Monsters and it is glorious. Highly recommended for anyone who likes kaiju and/or superheroes.
