Kara Zor-El has changed her look many times over the years. Logistically, this was due to changing fashion trends and DC Comics wanting the Girl of Steel to dress like a modern woman. However, the new Supergirl series establishes Kara as something of a fashionista. This becomes apparent before she revives a classic retro look, to replace her currently damaged super-suit.

Written and drawn by Sophie Campbell, with color art by Tamra Bonvillain, Supergirl #2 continues the mystery of the fake Linda Danvers. This is revealed to be the work of Lesla-Lar of Kandor. A disgruntled scientist, Lesla-Lar was jealous of Kara and her seemingly perfect life. After escaping to Earth, Lesla started using her advanced Kryptonian technology to take over Kara’s double life.

Fortunately, most of the people of Midvale are not fooled for long. Lesla-Lar is more concerned with the worship of her fans than saving their lives from various staged threats. However, Lesla-Lar does successfully rebrand Kara as “Phonygirl,” using her tech to paint a “P” across Kara’s super-suit top. This leaves the real Supergirl needing a new costume to assert her identity, even after exposing Lesla-Lar as an impostor.
Supergirl brings back her ’70s style with a classic suit

Thankfully, Kara has a number of super-suit alternatives to choose from, thanks to Lesla-Lar cleaning out Linda Danvers’ closet when she moved in. After Lena Luthor fails to fix Kara’s current costume, the two friends start digging for a “new old look.” What follows is a spirited montage of classic Supergirl costumes, most of which have not aged well.

Ultimately, Kara and Lena agree upon a super-suit with a V-neck blouse, short-shorts, and the S-shield on the left lapel. This super-suit was originally introduced during Supergirl’s first solo comic book series in 1972. It is perhaps the most practical of the many outfits Kara Zor-El has worn into battle. In any case, Kara will certainly have her hands full, as the closing page also reveals Lesla-Lar in her own new super-suit.
Supergirl #2 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
