Absolute Bane Has 1 Key Difference From Classic Batman Villain

Though a relatively recent introduction to the Batman mythos, Bane has become one of the Dark Knight’s greatest foes. He is one of the few enemies who can challenge Bruce Wayne both physically and mentally. The Absolute Universe incarnation of the Man Who Broke the Bat seems to be cut from the same cloth. However, the opening scene of Absolute Batman #9 reveals a key difference between him and the original.

Absolute Bane Has 1 Key Difference From Classic Batman Villain

Written by Scott Snyder, with art by Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman #9 offers the first look at this new Bane in action. He is shown to be an intellectual, discussing philosophy and history with his victims. Yet he is also superhumanly strong and, based on his costume, making use of the super-steroid called Venom.

Absolute Bane is a mercenary without a code

At first glance, the Absolute Universe Bane would seem to be precisely like the original. Beyond the costuming, he is both a physical and intellectual powerhouse. However, the preview also reveals that this Bane is a mercenary, beholden to his employer.

The classic Bane always worked toward his own goals. Even on those occasions where he partnered with other villains (such as when Ra’s Al Ghul chose him as his heir in the Legacy storyline, or his time with the Secret Six), it was as equal partners rather than as an underling. The classic Bane also had a strict (if strange) code of honor, which made him unsuitable for mercenary work. These are notable changes, which could indicate other ways that the Absolute Bane differs from the original.

Absolute Batman #9 arrives in comic shops everywhere on June 11, 2025.
