As Black Cat, Felicia Hardy has stolen from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as often as she’s helped Spider-Man to save lives. Even then, working with a despot like Kang the Conqueror seems a little bit much for her. However, as Avengers #23 reveals, Felicia has her reasons and a wish only Kang could make come true.
Written by Jed MacKay, with art by Farid Karami, Avengers #23 finds the team on a space casino run by the Grandmaster. Their target is an artifact that once belonged to Kang. Unfortunately, the time-traveling villain is already on the scene. So is Black Cat, whose talents as a thief Kang procured to bypass the casino security.
The Avengers are briefly blocked by a group of intergalactic mercenaries. This delays them, yet they are still able to subdue Kang and Black Cat. Tony Stark asks Felicia how much she had to be paid to kill her conscience and work with a despot like Kang. She replies that she wasn’t working for money, but for “something only Kang could offer me.”
Black Cat wanted to pull a heist with her father
A flashback to twenty years in the past reveals Felicia’s price. Kang took her back in time to meet her father, master thief Walter Hardy. She did not reveal her identity but did hire him to assist with the heist, which he pulled off on his own while the Avengers were focused on Kang and Black Cat.
Felicia Hardy will be the first to admit she’s greedy and untrustworthy. However, it takes more than money to buy her loyalties. The chance to ply her trade with her infamous father while outwitting the Avengers was too much to pass up.
