Amazing Spider-Man #1 Preview Pits Spidey Against Rhino

Marvel Comics previously announced a new era for everyone’s favorite wall-crawling web-slinger. After years of dealing with magic and other-dimensional threats, the new Amazing Spider-Man is poised to go back to basics. However, as the preview of the first issue shows, the life of Peter Parker will still be full of surprises.

Written by Joe Kelly, with art by Pepe Larraz and John Romita Jr., Amazing Spider-Man #1 finds Ol’ Web-Head mixing it up with the Rhino. However, there’s something different about the super-strong villain this time around. Something that hints at something sinister in the works, which Peter Parker will have to deal with.

Four pages from Amazing Spider-Man #1 may be viewed below.

New Amazing Spider-Man upgrading classic enemies

The story of Amazing Spider-Man #1 establishes several new challenges for the wall-crawler. Someone will be revealed as having boosted Rhino’s powers, making him more aggressive and irrational in the process. He will be the first of many villains to receive these “upgrades,” testing Spidey’s limits.

“I spend a lot of time thinking about what I love about Spider-Man and his cast,” Kelly explained in an interview with Polygon. “What stories resonated with me at different times of my life, and how I can synthesize all of that into something that works with what came before but breaks new ground. I feel a drive to take bold, unexpected swings in order to see how Spider-Man deals with Marvel-sized curve balls. Pressure makes diamonds.”

“Spider-Man was probably the first Marvel comic I read when I was a kid,” Larraz shared. “It is a privilege for me to be able to draw this character. Even more so that it’s guided by Joe Kelly’s hand. I’m a huge fan of Joe’s writing, from the way he builds characters to his dialogue, humor, and sense of action. Joe is great at everything he does, but the most important thing for me is that his stories matter, touching upon themes that are always relevant.”

Amazing Spider-Man #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on April 9, 2025.
