Dynamite Entertainment found success with their licensing of various Disney properties as comic books. Many of these continue the stories if classic cartoons like Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck. Now the publisher is breathing new life into the most famous of the Disney Afternoon series: DuckTales.
Written by Brandon Montclare with art by Tommaso Ronda, DuckTales #1 finds Huey, Dewey, and Louie bored out of their minds. The triplets have been tasked with helping Uncle Scrooge count his coin collection. (They aren’t at work or employed, because that implies they would be paid!) The monotony of the task sets the boys to scheming, trying to trick Scrooge into recalling exciting stories of how he made his fortune.

DuckTales a throwback to original animated series
DuckTales was Disney’s first attempt at producing an original animated series for syndication. It was loosely based upon the classic Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics of Carl Barks. It was considered a separate universe, however, due to some differences in the classic characters and the introduction of new ones — such as pilot Launchpad McQuack. Chief among these was the animated Scrooge being more soft-hearted, most likely due to the stricter guidelines for children’s entertainment at the time. In any case, it proved popular enough to start a new age of high quality television animation.

DuckTales saw a highly acclaimed animated reboot in 2017, just in time for the show’s 30th anniversary. This reboot addressed many of the criticisms of the original show, such as its portrayal of native cultures. However, its more modern aesthetic turned away some fans of the original and the comics. They had hoped the new show would stay closer to the classic Barks designs. The new Dynamite series does resemble the original cartoon, but it remains to be seen how well the stories will match the show.
DuckTales #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere in November 2024.
