Green Lantern #7 Reveals True Depth of DC’s Cosmic Turmoil

One ongoing theme in the Dawn of DC Green Lantern series has been the imbalance of cosmic powers. Hal Jordan forged his own Power Ring of pure Will, which offers him abilities beyond those of normal Green Lantern Corps members. His archenemy Sinestro, denied the power of Fear, tapped the Red power of Rage to escape his exile on Earth. These proved to be only the first symptoms of something being wrong with the emotional spectrum that powers all ring-bearers.

Green Lantern #7 by Jeremy Adams and Amancay Nahuelpan opens with a flashback detailing how the Green Lantern Corps came under the control of the United Planets. The flashback also details Hal Jordan’s last mission before he resigned from the Corps and how his friend Kilowog died. This, too, is revealed to be connected to the growing emotional spectrum interference.

Hal Jordan and Kilowog’s last mission was to Sinestro’s home planet of Korugar. The two veteran Lanterns were meant to act as an honor guard to the United Planets official trying to get Korugar to join the UP. However, the treaty talks were disrupted by three members of the Fear-empowered Sinestro Corps.

As Hal Jordan escorted the diplomat to safety, Kilowog faced the Sinestro Corps agents. All four of them were incinerated by a blast from the Sinestro Corps’ Central Power Battery. This was later said to be due to something causing the Battery to flare out of control. Despite the suspicious circumstances, Sinestro denied any wrongdoing and Korugar joined the UP. This was cold comfort to Jordan, however, who was certain Sinestro staged the attack.

Hal Jordan relates the tale to his friend Razer, who has an undefined past with both him and Kilowog. This leads Razer to reveal that the Central Power Battery of the Blue Lanterns on Odym was destroyed. Though the circumstances are not revealed, it seems clear that it is also tied to the growing cosmic imbalance faced by the Green Lantern of Earth.
