DC’s Static Gets a New Costume in Shadows of Dakota #7 First Look

DC has released a first-look preview for the upcoming seventh and final issue of Static: Shadows of Dakota.

Static: Shadows of Dakota #7 hits comic shops at the end of this month to wrap up Static‘s second season under the relaunched Milestone imprint. However, series artist and co-writer Nikolas Draper-Ivey has a parting gift for Virgil Hawkins: a brand-new costume. In Draper-Ivey and co-writer Vita Ayala’s final issue itself, the hero “teams up with Ebon to fight for the soul of Dakota.”

“Virgil is in the greatest fight he’s ever faced, and innocent lives are at stake,” an official description reads. “It’s time for Static to step out of the shadows and into the light if he intends to help Ebon reunite with his brother, Rubberband Man, and battle for the future of Dakota!” Shadows of Dakota #7 features a main cover by Draper-Ivey, as well as variant covers by Serg Acuña and Acky Bright. At this time, DC has revealed two unlettered preview pages, plus Draper-Ivey’s design sheet for Static’s new threads.

Static’s place in the DC multiverse

Created by the late, great Dwayne McDuffie alongside Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, Derek T. Dingle, and Christopher Priest, Virgil Hawkins/Static made his first full appearance in Static #1. He was the flagship character of Milestone Comics, an independently-owned imprint of DC.

Milestone Media shut down its comic book division in 1997, with many of its Dakotaverse titles — including Static — being canceled. However, Virgil Hawkins found a second life thanks to the 2000-2004 DC animated series Static Shock (which introduced Ebon as its main villain). The show’s success paved the way for Static to return to the world of comics. He eventually joined the main DC Universe as a result of the 2008-2009 event series Final Crisis.

After its decades-long hiatus, Milestone finally returned with a special one-shot in 2020. An all-new lineup of titles set within a new Milestone universe — dubbed Earth-M — launched in 2021. Among these titles was Static: Season One, which ran for six issues through early 2022. Shadows of Dakota launched as a follow-up series earlier this year.

Static: Shadows of Dakota #7 goes on sale Tuesday, November 28 from DC.
