Jonathan Hickman’s Inferno Ushers in a Bold New Era For the X-Men
The Reign of X could face its most daunting challenge yet. Later this year, writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Valerio Schiti’s Inferno will thrust the X-Men into an epic story that may also bring Mutantkind’s island stronghold to its knees.
Sharing its title with Marvel’s 1989 crossover event of the same name, Inferno puts Mystique front and center. Over the course of four issues, the shapeshifting mutant will try to tear down on Krakoa’s seemingly perfect utopia. Along the way, fans will also revisit story threads that began in Hickman’s own House of X/Powers of X miniseries.
“Promises were made and broken,” reads the series’ official description. “The rulers of Krakoa have been playing a dangerous game with a dangerous woman. And they are about to see how badly that can burn them. Having been denied her wishes yet again, Mystique is ready to follow through on her promise to burn the nation of Krakoa to the ground. Mutantkind’s bright future is threatened like never before as Hickman brings his game-changing plans to a head. Fans can expect more revelations from the lives of Moira MacTaggert, Nimrod’s revenge, vicious power plays, and more in this pivotal chapter in X-Men history.”
A story like this demands top-notch talent, and that’s why Schiti isn’t the only one contributing artwork to the series. Hickman is also teaming up with a handful of other artists on Inferno. And it also sounds like the “shocking payoff” won’t disappoint.
“I’m very excited that we’re finally getting to share with everyone the follow-up to House of X/Powers of X,” said Hickman. “The story is 160 pages over four issues drawn exquisitely by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva, and Stefano Caselli. I cannot wait for people to read it.”
