Marvel Is Introducing Spider-Bite Later This Year

It looks like Peter Parker is getting his own Mini-Me. According to Comic Book Resources, Marvel’s May solicitations have revealed a new pint-sized, costumed addition to the Spider-Man universe. A character named Spider-Bite will make his first appearance in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6.

According to Marvel’s description for the issue, Spider-Bite really has to step up in his debut story. “The neighborhood, and the planet, is doomed. Spider-Man is powerless to stop the end of the world. Only Earth’s Newest and Mightiest Hero, Spider-Bite, can save the day.”

Marvel hasn’t given any clue as to Spider-Bite’s origins or his true identity. But judging from the cover art, he appears to be a kid wearing Spidey’s iconic costume. Whoever he is, he’ll be joining a crowded Spider-Verse that already includes Peter, Miles Morales, and more. But if Spider-Bite is really that crucial to stopping a world-ending catastrophe, perhaps we shouldn’t discount his abilities yet.

Of course, this won’t be the first time that Peter has taken on a sidekick. Back in 2012,  Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos introduced Alpha, the costumed alter-ego of Midtown High student Andrew “Andy” Maguire. Alpha’s name was derived from live-action Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. During an accident at Horizon Labs, Andy gained super strength, super speed, and the ability to create powerful energy blasts.

However, the fan response to Alpha was almost universally negative. During a recent interview with SYFY WIRE, Slott said that was always his intent for the character. Admittedly, Slott believes that Alpha’s story should have been wrapped up in a single over-sized issue. Slott also considers that story to be one of his biggest regrets from his time on the title. Regardless, we’re hoping that Spider-Bite will receive a friendlier reception!

Tom Taylor and artist Yildiray Cinar are the creative team behind Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6. It will hit comic book stores in May.
