DC Shares First Look at Jon Cryer as Supergirl’s Lex Luthor

Fans of The CW’s Supergirl were likely taken aback when it was announced back in November that Jon Cryer would be joining the series as Lex Luthor. After all, Cryer is primarily known for his comical work on Two and a Half Men and Pretty in Pink. Perhaps to quell any skepticism, DC has released the first official image of Cryer’s Lex Luthor. In the pic, Luthor stares mischievously at the camera from the confines of his maximum-security jail cell. You can check out the photo via Twitter below.

According to the announcement on DC’s official website, Lex will attempt to draft his half-sister, Lena, into one of his devious schemes. It’s also hinted that he might be teaming up with Sam Witwer’s Agent Liberty.

With the exception of Michael Rosenbaum’s portrayal on Smallville, Lex Luthor’s live-action portrayals have been hard to take seriously as legitimate threats to Superman and his family. It would be easy to argue that the villain has yet to receive his proper due.

Despite Cryer’s comedic pedigree, director Kevin Smith insists that the actor won’t be following a similar path. Smith has directed a handful of Supergirl episodes in the past. On a recent episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith promised that Cryer’s upcoming appearance will represent a “dark turn” for the character.

Cryer will make his debut as Lex in Supergirl season 4’s fifteenth episode, which is titled “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and it will air on Sunday, March 17.
