Ryan Reynolds just dropped a surprising answer about returning to the Green Lantern universe after 15 years. The actor revealed whether he would appear in HBO’s hit DC series Lanterns during a recent interview.
Ryan Reynolds on if he wants to cameo in Lanterns
Ryan Reynolds recently expressed his desire to make a cameo in HBO’s hit DC series Lanterns, 15 years after he starred in 2011’s Green Lantern. The actor shared his enthusiasm during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight.
“I would totally do a cameo in that. I love it,” Reynolds said when asked about the possibility.
Reynolds portrayed Hal Jordan in the 2011 film, which faced harsh criticism and underperformed commercially. The movie was meant to kickstart a broader superhero franchise for DC, but those ambitions quickly fell apart. Reynolds has regularly joked about the film in the years since. He memorably referenced it through his Deadpool franchise, particularly in a self-deprecating end-credits scene in Deadpool 2.
His willingness to return to the Green Lantern world is nothing new either. Back in 2021, rumors circulated that he might appear as Hal Jordan in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Reynolds denied his involvement at the time but acknowledged the appeal. “It’s not me. But what a cool pirate flag to cameo as Hal,” he wrote on Twitter.
Snyder later revealed he had genuinely considered bringing Reynolds back alongside another Lantern. The director told The Hollywood Reporter he would have included Reynolds “as the additional Lantern” to expand the Corps. Snyder also described Reynolds as “a great sport” who supported the idea.
Lanterns offers a completely different take on the Green Lantern mythology. The HBO series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The show follows the two Lanterns as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. It forms a central part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s growing DC Universe.
With Chandler now inhabiting the Hal Jordan role, any Reynolds appearance would likely fall outside the main DCU continuity.
