A beloved actor from the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine has expressed interest in reprising their role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor played an underrated mutant in the film and hasn’t appeared in any other Marvel project since then.
Dominic Monaghan on if he could return as Bolt in X-Men reboot
Dominic Monaghan, best known for portraying Meriadoc Brandybuck, or Merry, in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films and related projects, also appeared as mutant Chris Bradley, aka Bolt, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Monaghan revealed that he would be open to reprising the role.
The actor recalled having a “great time” while working on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which saw him share the screen with stars including Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Liev Schreiber, and rapper will.i.am. In the film, Bolt possesses the ability to manipulate electricity and electronic devices, making him a unique addition to the mutant lineup.
However, Bolt ultimately meets a brutal fate when Schreiber’s Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, kills him. Monaghan acknowledged the character’s unfortunate ending, joking that Bradley “had his light switched off by Liev’s character.” Despite Bolt’s demise, the actor remains hopeful about the possibility of returning to the franchise.
“But I think there are certainly more stories to tell with his character, and the new cast looks great,” Monaghan observed. He went on to praise Sadie Sink, who made her debut as Jean Grey in the MCU in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
“I thought Sadie Sink in the Spider-Man film was fantastic, and I think she’s going to be really good,” he said. “The cast looked great, so maybe they should bring back an old-man version of me, an old, wisened version of me, locked away in some caravan somewhere. I’d totally be into it.”
In recent years, several actors from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, including Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, have made the jump to Disney and the MCU.
As Marvel Studios continues expanding its mutant universe, the door remains open for more familiar faces from the previous films to return, including Dominic Monaghan. Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot is currently scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on May 5, 2028.
