Star Wars: Dave Filoni Gives Yoda’s Most Famous Movie Quote a Completely New Meaning

Dave Filoni has offered a fresh take on one of Yoda’s most famous Star Wars lines. During Disney’s Worldbuilders panel at D23, he linked the quote to commitment, practice, and creative growth.

The Lucasfilm president discussed the meaning behind “Do or do not. There is no try” while explaining what the quote means to him.

Yoda said, “Do or do not. There is no try.’ And people say, ‘But Dave, I try all the time.’ I’m like, ‘Right, because you’re not doing.’ Trying doesn’t mean that you’re winning or that you’re accomplishing, but it means you’re doing your best. Do your best and just get going and, and don’t just half try. Don’t not commit.”

What did Yoda want Luke to learn?

The quote comes from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. On Dagobah, Luke doubts that he can lift his sunken X-wing with the Force. He says he will “try,” revealing that he is already unsure of himself.

Yoda wants Luke to stop approaching his training with that doubt. Instead, he pushes Luke to fully commit to the task and trust that he can learn through practice. Luke fails during his first attempt, but Yoda then lifts the spacecraft himself. The moment reinforces the lesson that Luke’s lack of belief is holding him back.

Filoni takes that idea beyond the Force. He connects it to learning any skill, arguing that natural talent can give someone an advantage, but training helps people improve. He also applies the lesson to young creators. Modern tools make it easier to tell stories, but creators still need to start, keep learning, and accept failure as part of the process.

Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is the second film in the original trilogy and was released in 1980. Directed by Irvin Kershner, the movie follows Luke as he continues his Jedi training with Yoda while the Empire hunts the Rebel Alliance. It also introduces major moments involving Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Leia Organa.
