Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani Shares Honest Thoughts on Divisive Supergirl DCU Movie

Supergirl ended its theatrical run as a box-office bomb, with divisive reviews from the audience. Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani recently shared her honest, unfiltered opinion on the divisive Supergirl movie. She also explained why film is difficult for her to judge.

In a video shared by Revenge of Comics on TikTok, Vellani opened up about adapting beloved comic books into films. The conversation then turned to Supergirl. She expressed her love for Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic that inspired the film. “It’s hard for me to speak on Supergirl because, my god, Tom King’s book is just the greatest thing I’ve ever read,” Vellani said.

The actress then explained why she struggles to compare the movie with the source material. She understands how difficult it is to make a good adaptation. However, the comic holds a special place for her, and she called it one of the only stories that made her cry. She said the comic was “one of the first comics, maybe the only comic, that really teared me up.”

The Canadian actress highlighted the comic’s art and the backstory of Kara. “The art just amplifies everything to a million,” she added. “It’s a perfect read.” She also admitted not every comic she loves needs to become a movie. “That, to me, is where I’m like, ‘I don’t want to compare it to the source material but that is all I can compare it to,'” she told Revenge of Comics.

What did critics have to say about the DCU Supergirl movie?

Critics had mixed reactions to Supergirl, and some of them reflected Vellani’s concerns regarding source material adaptations. Many critics pointed out issues with the movie’s pacing, thin script, and flattened character arcs. However, Milly Alcock received great praise for her performance as Kara Zor-El.

As of now, it holds a 52% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 370 reviews. Meanwhile, the audience score sits at 73%.

For Vellani, Woman of Tomorrow had a lasting impression on her. That makes her reluctance to compare Supergirl with the source material reasonable.
