Crystal Lake: How Mrs. Voorhees Horror TV Show Will Differ From Friday the 13th Movies

The Crystal Lake TV show, featuring Pamela Voorhees, will differ from Friday the 13th movies in a big way. The popular horror slasher franchise initially kicked off in the year 1980 and saw the last entry release in 2009.

Brad Caleb Kane, showrunner of Crystal Lake, has revealed how the TV series will take a different route compared to what Friday the 13th films have shown in the last four decades. Speaking at a sneak peek event, he mentioned the biggest conceptual issue attached to the Friday the 13th universe.

“Teens go out to a place, they are having sex and doing drugs, and then they are hunted by Mrs. Voorhees or Jason in the subsequent films. But, thankfully, we weren’t making a Friday the 13th movie.”

Focusing on what the TV show will do differently than the movies, he added, “We were doing a story about the town and a prequel about Jason’s mom, and it was really fresh snow.” Reports from Bloody Disgusting highlight that Kane’s creative team was given full creative freedom to build out the show’s lore.

What else do we know about the Crystal Lake TV show?

Despite taking a broader narrative approach, Kane reassured the fans that the show will deliver on expectations. “You watch the first four episodes, and you go, ‘Okay, they are telling a story, and there’s a little bit of paranoid conspiracy thriller here, and it’s a psychological devolution or evolution, however you want to put it, but where’s Friday the 13th?’ Pam goes full Friday the 13th in this season, and you will see it.”

Speaking more of the Crystal Lake TV series, it will feature Linda Cardellini as Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees. She will be seen going through the grief of her son drowning in the lake a year ago.

According to the official synopsis, “When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door, digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: Just who is Pam Voorhees?”

The ensemble cast on the series also features Devin Kessler, Will Catlett, Danielle Kotch, and Nick Cordileone.

The Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake is scheduled to premiere on Peacock on October 15, 2026.
