The End of Oak Street’s J.J. Abrams Definitively Reveals if Movie Has Cloverfield Connection

J.J. Abrams has finally addressed the popular fan theory that his new production, The End of Oak Street, is connected to his Cloverfield franchise. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker set the record straight, confirming that it is not true.

“The only connection to our Cloverfield movies is that Ewan’s partner is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane, who we were very lucky to get to work with and who I adore,” Abrams shared. “So there was that, but other than that, people are just making connections that they happen to see.”

Abrams also opened up about his decision to rediscover the dinosaur genre beyond the familiar Jurassic Park franchise. “This was a movie set in suburban America,” Abrams explained. “Our neighborhoods, our backyards, our living rooms. So to have dinosaurs in that world, in our world, there was a juxtaposition that was so immediately exciting.”

The filmmaker added, “It wasn’t just cool dinosaurs; it was dinosaurs interacting with things and people and our front lawn, and suddenly it was a very different experience even reading it.”

Why did J.J. Abrams fans think The End of Oak Street might be part of the Cloverfield franchise?

One reason fans have long speculated that The End of Oak Street might have a connection to the Cloverfield series is that both projects are produced by J.J. Abrams. Additionally, some believed that the new movie’s bizarre events with dinosaurs spawning in a quiet neighbourhood are reminiscent of the space-time rupture in the Cloverfield universe.

However, Abrams has now confirmed that the movies are exclusive projects. The End of Oak Street has no connection to the Cloverfield film series.

Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, The End of Oak Street is a sci-fi survival thriller. It follows a family living in a suburban neighborhood where prehistoric animals suddenly begin to appear following a mysterious cosmic event. The movie stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, Christian Convery, and more.

The End of Oak Street arrives in theaters on August 14, 2026.
