Before Jason Momoa, Jeffrey Dean Morgan Almost Got Lobo, but What Happened?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan came close to playing Lobo years before Jason Momoa landed the role. The actor revealed that a perfect storm of creative delays, physical doubts, and a nervous studio ultimately killed his chance to bring the “Main Man” to life.

Why Jeffrey Dean Morgan couldn’t play Lobo

The opportunity was more than just fan speculation. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morgan explained that producer Akiva Goldsman, who worked with him on The Losers, held the rights to the DC antihero and initiated genuine discussions about the project.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan did not know Lobo before the talks began. Once he dug into the comics, the material clicked. “I had never heard of Lobo, and so I dove right in. It suited my humor and my sarcasm, all that,” he said. Additionally, the physical transformation posed a challenge, but one Morgan felt ready to tackle. “It didn’t suit my body but I was like, I got time. I got a year to get big,” he added.

A script did circulate during development. However, The Walking Dead: Dead City star described it as a draft that “needed work” and never received the necessary rewrites. Studio nerves gave the final blow. Warner Brothers had just released Watchmen and The Losers, both underperforming at the box office. Executives grew cautious about greenlighting another DC adaptation with the same actor attached. As Morgan shared, “I think Warner Brothers coming off of Watchmen and Losers and wasn’t having a great time with DC. Maybe Jeffrey Dean at the same time. Now that I think about it, maybe we shouldn’t bet too much on this dude.”

Morgan had publicly chased the role since 2009, but the project stalled indefinitely. The character itself holds a complicated publishing history. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 in June 1983. Now, its cinematic debut was done by Jason Momoa in DC’s Supergirl.
