Why The Bad Guys 2 Box Office Predictions Are Higher Than The Original

Some animation fans are looking for The Bad Guys 2 box office predictions, especially since the first film was a surprise hit in 2022. This heist comedy sequel, whose trailer has received over 40 million hits on YouTube, from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation follows Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Shark, Mr. Piranha, and Ms. Tarantula being pulled back into the criminal world. The movie releases nationwide on August 1, just a week after The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Fortunately, a new report remains optimistic for the outlook of The Bad Guys 2, providing reasons why this follow-up is expected to do better than the first film.

What are The Bad Guys 2 box office projections?

The latest box office predictions for The Bad Guys 2 has it earning $26 million to $35 million in its opening weekend and somewhere between $101 million and $143 million in domestic sales.

These numbers come straight from a July 11 report by the analytics site Box Office Theory. As a point of comparison, the original 2022 film earned $23.9 million in its opener and $97 million domestically. It then went on to get $152 million in international sales for an impressive $250 million total.

An earlier June 20 report explains several reasons for these higher projections, stating that this sequel is releasing during a time “that lacks top-tier tentpoles aimed at young kids and pre-teens.” For this family-friendly audience, the film will not “face direct competition for young kids and parents again during its run as the release slate is absent much in the way of animation through fall.”

Indeed, looking at the movie calendar for 2025, we don’t see any animated films in August or September. It will still need to compete against Fantastic Four 2025 and perhaps Freakier Friday, the family-friendly Disney film releasing on August 8.

This same report conservatively forecasted that The Bad Guys 2 would only get $26 million during its opening weekend, but the full range of $26-$35 million was revealed in later reports. The budget for the film has not been revealed yet, but it should be similar to the $80 million of its predecessor.

Along with the release of the animated film, Regal Cinemas will be offering several plushes called The Plush Guys and The Baddest Combo that features a collectible popcorn tin, cup, and character topper of Mr. Wolf and Mr. Shark.
