The school was founded 129 years ago in 1896 and primarily provides education to boys from Year 9 to Year 13. It also offers education to girls in senior years, 12 and 13 (via 4Filming).

Filming also took place at Piha Beach. The coastal settlement, located 40 kilometers from Auckland, is a popular day-trip destination for Auckland residents. Many visitors flock to the beach for its rugged beauty. It is also the site of the famed Lion Rock.
