James Gunn Debunks Superman Villain Rumors, Gives Update on DCU Movie

James Gunn has debunked rumors regarding who the villain in 2025’s Superman will be.

Following online reports that Superman may feature Ultraman as the main antagonist that the Man of Steel has to fight, Gunn took to Threads to assure fans that’s not the case. Rather, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will serve as the main villain, as was previously expected.

“The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman,” Gunn wrote. “The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention. So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)”

Responding to a comment saying “I’m just ready to see Superman,” Gunn also provided an update regarding how far along the movie was into filming.

“And I’m almost ready to show it to you (even though we’re probably only 18% or so through it),” he said.

Who stars in Superman?

David Corenswet is playing Clark Kent in Superman, which marks the first feature film in Gunn and Peter Safran’s forthcoming DCU, while Rachel Brosnahan is playing Lois Lane.

The cast of the movie also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Terence Rosemore as Otis, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

The DCU officially kicks off with an animated Creature Commando series releasing later this year. Superman then flies into theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
