X-Men: First Class Adds Oliver Platt

August 16, 2010

Will play a character called the Man in Black

Oliver Platt is the latest to join the cast of X-Men: First Class, reports Deadline.

Platt's role is listed as "the Man in Black" and seems to be an original character created specficially for the film. News of his casting comes on the heels of this morning's report that Rose Byrne will appear in the film as Moira MacTaggert, joining an ever-expanding cast that includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, Alice Eve, Kevin Bacon, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi and Jason Flemyng.

The most conspicuous absence in the cast so far is an actor for the role of Scott Summers (aka Cyclops).

X-Men: First Class opens June 3, 2011.

Too many characters
I feel this is going to turn out like X3. Just a flood of characters once again. I'm waiting til the day the rights go back to Marvel. Marvel isn't the perfect movie studio either, but im sure they can do their own franchises some justice.

Man of Steele
Really? For a series that has hundreds (currently) of mutants to pick from, they choose to create one specifically for the big screen?

I am boycotting this movie. Let Marvel reclaim their rights!!!

"The Man in Black"..? Uh, didn't Joaquin Pheonix already do that? lol Okay, seriously...WHY?! At first I had expectations for this film solely based on Vaughn. Now it seems like Fox has their hand deep in the cookie jar again.

I really wish studios would let the directors do their thing. There's NO WAY Vaughn would be pulling this stunt with Platt and the Azazel character. Just stick to the basics for crying out loud and make it an origin story that could essentially be a reboot.

brian - upon reading the full article on deadline, you will discover that the man in black is not, in fact, a mutant. I see your point, but I don't really have a problem with the writers creating a non-descript human character.

However, I still would like to see Marvel reclaim the rights and do an X-movie right.

LT Smash- Did not realize that. Thanks for the update. However, that does not change my feelings that a series that has thousands of characters (including mutants, morlocks, humans, etc), I do not understand why they need to invent characters.

As an aside, with the vast amount of characters in the X-Men series, I find it hard to believe a character they create for the big screen will not already exist in the comics. Not saying it isn't possible, but with the different writers, storylines, etc throughout the past 40+ years of comics I find it hard to believe that Fox will be creating an amazingly original character/story in their year long development of this movie. This opinion is based off Fox's past history.
