Everything We Know About the 2016 Superhero Movies

Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016

After an extensive casting search to play the Sorcerer Supreme, “Sherlock” and Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch was selected to play the title hero. He’ll be joined by Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen in mystery roles. The film is scripted by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson. Production on the film is set to begin this year in London.

Concept art for the movie was shown at this year’s D23 expo, which was described as follows:

“We see Strange being monitored by SHIELD with director Scott Derrickson narrating the plot. It looks like we’re going to have some different Strange costume variations. Lots of weird astral plane stuff with a cosmic bent. We see planets and lights, there are city scenes with cars suspended in the air. The city itself looks like it’s twisting in on itself, kind of like INCEPTION. He gets in the car crash and goes on a search for the Ancient One. The final shot is actually rendered test footage of a hand delivering a blast of light.”

The film’s director of photography Ben Davis opened up to Screen Daily about the visuals fans can expect, calling it Marvel’s Fantasia.

“Most of the work within it is about other dimensions,” Davis tells the outlet. “And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as ‘Marvel’s Fantasia’ in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done… There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of [M.C.] Escher stuff.”
