Children of Men Spider-Man What If?

Marvel Scrapped a ‘Very Very Dark’ Spider-Man What If? Episode Compared to Children of Men

Marvel’s What If…? head writer and showrunner A.C. Bradley says there’s a scrapped script for a “very very dark” Spider-Man episode she compared to Children of Men.

Speaking with IGN, Bradley discussed how the second season of Marvel’s What If…?, which recently premiered on Disney+, was largely written during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also mentioned a “very, very dark” script for a Spider-Man What If…? episode that will likely never see the light of day.

“It felt like the world was already ending and we didn’t need to add to it,” Bradley said. “And so it became kind of an escape and a fun release. However, I did write an episode, which is forever going in a drawer, that was very, very dark. I was calling it ‘Children of Men with Spider-Man.’”

Released in 2006, Children of Men is a dystopian thriller co-written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Set in a world where human beings have become infertile, the movie sees a man named Theo (Clive Owen) try to help a woman named Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) who has found herself in a troubling and dangerous situation.

What Is What If…? Season 2 about?

Based on Marvel’s comic book of the same name, What If…? premiered on Disney+ in 2021. The second season was released over nine consecutive days in December 2023, while a third season is now currently in the works.

“The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” the official synopsis for What If…? Season 2 reads. “The animated anthology series questions, revisits, and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.”

All nine episodes of What If…? Season 2 are currently streaming on Disney+.
