The Duffer Brothers Tease a New Tone For Stranger Things Spinoff Series

Stranger Things 4 is over, and Stranger Things 5 has yet to be filmed. However, if the response to the fourth season is any indication, the future of the Stranger Things franchise looks bright. Netflix hasn’t formally ordered a Stranger Things spinoff series, but it seems likely to happen. During a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer admitted that they haven’t pitched it directly to Netflix yet. But assuming it goes forward, it will have a much different tone than the original series. They also shot down rumors of returning characters headlining the show.

“It’s not following – I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff, or that it’s another number,” said the Duffers. “That’s not interesting to [us] because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”

They added that the new show is “1000% different” from Stranger Things. The Duffers also indicated they plan to hand off the project to a new showrunner “while we go on to do new stuff.”

Additionally, the Duffers stressed that there are links between Stranger Things and its spinoff. But tonally, the spinoff will stand on its own.

“The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it,” noted the Duffers. “There is story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

Stranger Things 4 is now streaming. However, there’s no word on when Stranger Things 5 may begin production.
