HBO Max Drops the First Four Minutes From Aquaman: King of Atlantis

When it was announced that James Wan would be producing a new animated Aquaman miniseries, many fans assumed it would be tonally similar to his 2018 movie, which breathed new life into the character and paved the way for a highly-anticipated sequel that’s currently in production. However, the creators of Aquaman: King of Atlantis are taking Arthur Curry in a completely different direction. Ahead of the show’s debut this week, HBO Max has released the first four minutes from the series premiere. You can check it out for yourself below.

The clip probably won’t win over anyone who is still put off by the animation style. Regardless, it gives viewers a better idea of what sort of tone they can expect from the series. To put it simply, this is a very light-hearted approach to the Aquaman mythos, complete with absurdist character designs for Atlantis’ fish-like denizens. As for Arthur himself? Let’s just say it’s going to be hard for him to rule over his new kingdom when he can barely manage to sit on his throne. Especially when he has a full list of “kingly deeds” to attend to.

Cooper Andrews, best known for playing Jerry on The Walking Dead, headlines the series as Arthur. The opening scene also introduces the supporting cast, including Gillian Jacobs as Mera and Thomas Lennon as Vulko. Dana Snyder will also provide the voice of Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master, who appears in the clip to challenge his half-brother and reclaim his place as Atlantis’ king.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis premieres on HBO Max on October 14.
