Wayne Che Yip Joins Amazon’s Lord of the Rings as Director and EP

Another creative has joined the upcoming Lord of the Rings series. In a press release, Amazon announced that British Chinese director Wayne Che Yip had joined the upcoming series’s creative team as a director and co-executive producer. He will direct four episodes on the show, taking over from Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona, who directed the 2-part pilot to set the tone. Yip has previously worked on series like Hunters, Preacher, Channel 4’s Utopia, and Doctor Who. Yip and Amazon Studios have also worked together for the upcoming epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time.

“It is a true honor to be invited into the world of Tolkien by J.D. & Patrick and Amazon Studios,” he said, via press release. “Every day I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told.”

At the moment, the project is filming Seasons 1 and 2 in New Zealand. Amazon Studios has penned a 5-season series, with 8 to 10 episodes per season. The story will take place during the Second Age in Middle-earth’s history, many years before the Fellowship of the Ring. This time period saw the rise and fall of Númenor, the kingdom of Men in the west of Middle-earth. According to the producers’ plans, The Lord of the Rings should premiere on Prime Video somewhere in 2021. Amazon has yet to set an official release date.
