Timothy Olyphant May Play Cobb Vanth In The Mandalorian Season 2

Earlier this month, word broke that Justified star Timothy Olyphant has joined the second season of Disney+’s The Mandalorian. At the time, there were no clues about whom Olyphant will play. However, a new report suggests that Olyphant will portray an established character from the Star Wars novels.

According to Slash Film, Olyphant’s role is Cobb Vanth, “the self-appointed sheriff of the Tatooine-based settlement Freetown.” Within the Star Wars: Aftermath novels, Cobb wore Boba Fett’s Mandalorian armor that the Jawas recovered from Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge. After the events of Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett was presumed to be dead or trapped within the Sarlacc Pit. That allowed Cobb to use the armor without facing its previous owner.

Aftermath established Cobb as the protector of Freetown, and an enemy of the Red Key Raiders and other criminals. Slash Film also notes that Olyphant filmed his scenes while wearing Boba Fett’s iconic armor, so that implies that his backstory from the books remains intact. However, it’s unclear if Temuera Morrison’s return to the franchise as Boba Fett is heading towards a showdown with Cobb Vanth, or simply setting up a flashback sequence. Answers probably won’t arrive until the second season debuts later this year.

The Mandalorian season 2 will hit Disney+ in October.
