Supergirl Casts Thomas Lennon as the New Mxyzptlk

Mr. Mxyzptlk is making his way back to Supergirl in 2020. However, he’s going to look a lot different from the last time viewers saw him. Deadline brings word that Thomas Lennon has joined the series as the newest actor to play the impish supervillain on the small screen.

Lennon is perhaps best known for co-creating and starring on Comedy Central’s Reno 911! from 2003 until 2009. Earlier this month, it was announced that the series is getting a revival on Quibi next year. More recently, Lennon starred opposite Matthew Perry on CBS’ remake of The Odd Couple. Interestingly, this won’t be Lennon’s first trip to the DC Universe. He voiced Chief O’Hara in two animated Batman films based on the 1960s TV series. He also had a cameo as Bruce Wayne’s doctor in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

Peter Gadiot previously played Mxyzptlk on two episodes of Supergirl’s second season in 2017. He traveled to National City from the Fifth Dimension in order to profess his love for Kara Danvers. But when she spurned his advances, he threatened to wreak havoc across Earth. Kara was eventually able to send him back to his home dimension by tricking him into spelling his name backwards. It sounds like the series intends to explain his change in appearance by simply reminding fans that he’s a shape-shifter.

Mxyzptlk was introduced in Superman #30 in 1944 has since been brought to life by a variety of actors in different media. The character has been portrayed by the likes of Michael J. Pollard (Superboy), Howie Mandel (Lois & Clark), Trent Ford (Smallville), and Gilbert Gottfried (Superman: The Animated Series). Lennon will have a recurring role as Mxy during Supergirl’s current season.
