Tom Hiddleston Admits He’s Known About Loki’s Series For Over a Year

Of all the Disney+ TV shows that Marvel has in the works, Loki may be the one that fans are most excited for. Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of the silver-tongued God of Mischief has always been one of the best things about the MCU. With this, a spinoff seemed inevitable. Although Marvel officially announced the series at Comic-Con last month, news of its existence first broke last fall. But it turns out that Hiddleston has known about it for even longer than that.

Hiddleston recently sat down with MTV’s Josh Horowitz to talk about his upcoming Broadway debut in Betrayal. When the discussion turned to Loki, Hiddleston revealed exactly how long he’s been keeping the show a secret.

“I knew about six weeks before the worldwide release of Avengers: Infinity War,” said Hiddleston. “Which meant I had to go and do press for Avengers: Infinity War going, ‘Yup, that’s it guys.’ So I did know back then, but I didn’t know what the pitch [or] the story was.”

Because Loki is being spearheaded by Rick & Morty’s Michael Waldron, viewers are expecting it to have plenty of humor. Hiddleston promises that this will be the case. However, it’s important to remember that the Loki we’ll see is from 2012, following his escape from S.H.I.E.L.D. custody after Avengers: Endgame’s time heist suffered a Tesseract-related mishap.

“I know this character now,” said Hiddleston. “I feel that the audience knows him. And playing him — and playing him truthfully, but presenting him with new challenges, which then I’d have to change him in different ways, is the most exciting aspect of it. You’ve got his very specific gifts. His intelligence, treachery, his mischief, his magic, and then seeing him come up against more formidable opponents, the like of which he has never seen or known. I wish I could tell you what happens, but I can’t.”

You can listen to Hiddleston’s comments for yourself below (the Loki discussions starts at 13:08). Which “formidable opponents” do you think we’ll see on the new series? Tell us what you think in the comment section!
