Starz Renews American Gods for Season 3

Before American Gods premiered its second season on Starz, it was reported that the series might be getting an early renewal for season 3. Now, the network has made it official. According to Variety, the series will return for at least one more season with a new showrunner at the helm.

Charles “Chic” Eglee is replacing Jesse Alexander as American Gods’ showrunner. Eglee’s previous TV credits include Dexter, The Walking Dead, Hemlock Grove, and The Shield. This won’t be the first time the show has changed creative hands. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green developed the series and served as co-showrunners during its first season. After some behind-the-scenes drama, the pair departed the show and were succeeded by Alexander. Alexander split showrunning duties with executive producer Neil Gaiman, who wrote the novel on which the series is based.

“I’m thrilled American Gods has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee,” said Gaiman in a statement. “Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the American Gods torch on to glory. Thank you to Fremantle, Starz and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers. It’s their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter.”

Reviews haven’t been particularly kind to American Gods’ current season, which began airing earlier this week. Despite Gaiman’s increased level of involvement this year, critics have taken aim at the series for being dull and unfocused.
