Marvel’s Updated Film and TV Slate

by SuperHeroHype

Marvel Entertainment has reported its 2005 Third Quarter results today and said both profit and revenue fell. Marvel’s Chairman, Morton Handel, commented, “We are pleased with the box office success of the ‘Fantastic Four’ feature film, which launched this character franchise and has grossed over $329 million worldwide to date. Marvel’s business model continues to be solidly profitable and generates strong free cash flow.

“As reviewed in more detail below, Marvel is revising its 2005 financial guidance to reflect the contribution of a landmark, long-term license agreement in the video game category which has largely offset some weaker than expected performance in our toy operation. However, our 2006 outlook reflects a difficult year for both toys and licensing. Despite the near-term challenges, the management team and Board remain confident in the long-term power of Marvel’s business model, which will generate high levels of cash in coming years. Accordingly, the Board has approved an additional $250 million share repurchase authorization. We believe repurchases will be accretive to earnings and will provide a very attractive long-term return on investment as we proceed beyond 2006. Those years will include the release of both the ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ sequels in 2007 and the anticipated launch of Marvel’s own film slate starting in 2008.”

The company stated the following as its upcoming slate:

IDT Licenses Hellboy Animation Rights

by SuperHeroHype

IDT Entertainment announced today that it has licensed all animation rights to the Hellboy property from Revolution Studios. IDT Entertainment, in partnership with Revolution Studios, plans to develop animated content for television and home entertainment as well as a full range of integrated marketing applications across all categories. Production will utilize IDT Entertainment’s animation studios in Los Angeles. IDT Entertainment Sales will handle worldwide sales and Anchor Bay Entertainment, an IDT Entertainment company, will distribute DVD/video product. IDT Entertainment is a subsidiary of IDT Corporation, an international telecom, entertainment, and technology company.

“Hellboy is a seminal figure in the comic book world and a proven winner in the feature film arena,” said Morris Berger, IDT Entertainment CEO. “This deal adds to the luster of our ever-growing library of intellectual properties with worldwide fan appeal. We believe Hellboy’s animated incarnation will benefit from our international sales, marketing, and distribution network.”

All key creative talent and production entities associated with Hellboy, the successful 2004 live action feature film, will be involved in the continuing animated adventures of the Hellboy character. Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Selma Blair (Liz Sherman), who headlined the feature film, will lead the voice cast for the animated versions. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and director Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, “The Devil’s Backbone”) are creative producers and will be intimately involved in story development and animation style. Tad Stones, who has produced and directed successful full length video features and animated television series (Disney’s “Atlantis: Milo’s Return,” “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins,” “Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves”), will be supervising director and supervising producer for IDT Entertainment. Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin of Lawrence Gordon Productions and Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics, who produced the 2004 live action feature, will executive produce.

According to Revolution Studios’ Daniel Ferleger, “We are excited to be working with IDT Entertainment and look forward to a successful collaboration to bring the Hellboy character to an even wider audience.”

Hellboy is based on the comic book series by Mike Mignola. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom, who raised him to be a hero. Hellboy handles the most dangerous missions for Dr. Broom’s Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. He leads an unlikely family of agents including a “merman,” Abe Sapien, and the pyro-kinetic Liz Sherman, who can manifest and control fire. They are the world’s first and last line of defense against the dark powers who threaten all of mankind.

The 2004 live action feature film Hellboy has grossed more than $100 million worldwide. The “Hellboy” comic book series (available through Dark Horse Comics) is one of the industry’s biggest sellers.

Frank Langella on Playing Perry White

by SuperHeroHype

The Edmonton Sun spoke to actor Frank Langella about playing Perry White in director Bryan Singer’s upcoming Superman Returns:

Langella replaced Hugh Laurie as Perry White, the editor of the Daily Planet, in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Laurie had to back out to film a second season of his hit Fox-TV series House.

“With Bryan’s blessing, my Perry White will be very different than the previous ones,” said Langella.

“I couldn’t play a small man who barks out orders while he’s chomping on his cigar. It’s physically wrong for me. I play Perry as the strong, quiet type.”

Clarke Duncan to Return for Sin City 2

by SuperHeroHype

Empire Online chatted with Michael Clarke Duncan who says it’s very likely he’ll star in Sin City 2. (Sin City Spoiler Ahead!)

Hang on, though… didn’t Manute die in the first Sin City? Well, yes, but the story that will form the basis for the Robert Rodriguez-Frank Miller sequel, A Dame To Kill For, takes place before Sin City: The Movie. So Duncan’s had a reprieve… now he just needs to get the nod from Frank’n’Robert that he’s returning.

“We’ve talked about it. Manute has a very big role [in that] and I certainly wanna be a part of it. You’ll think, ‘didn’t he get killed?’ but Frank doesn’t do it in order. True fans will understand that.”

Sin City 2 is expected to hit theaters summer 2006.

The epic action-adventure is directed by Bryan Singer (“X-Men” films, The Usual Suspects) and marks a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world’s most beloved superheroes. “‘Superman Returns’ is going to be an epic adventure, and by also offering the film in IMAX’s format, we’re giving audiences a unique way to experience the return of the Man of Steel,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. “The IMAX theatre network is generating impressive box office returns for Warner Bros. Pictures, and we’re excited to continue releasing more of our biggest films in IMAX’s format.”

“We specifically developed the IMAX DMR® conversion process so we’d be able to showcase tentpole pictures like ‘Superman Returns’ on the IMAX canvas, and we’re delighted to be working with our great partners Warner Bros. Iron Man Returns to Marvel

by SuperHeroHype

Variety has confirmed that after more than two years of unsuccessful development at New Line, Marvel has taken back film rights to Iron Man, the comic book about an inventor who dons a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero.

The company may raise additional money to produce Iron Man itself as part of its new internal production slate. In such a case, the film would likely be distributed by Paramount, where Marvel has a distribution deal.

“Right now we’re concentrating on finding the right creative talent,” explained Marvel Studios’ Avi Arad. “It’s not a part of our slate deal, but we can raise the money to do it if we choose to. We would also have no difficulty licensing it to another studio.”

Late last year, the studio announced Nick Cassavetes was attached to direct, but it turned out The Notebook helmer never had a deal. Drafts by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Smallville) and David Hayter (X-Men) didn’t get traction.

Marvel will now start development from scratch, commissioning a new script and possibly attaching a director before deciding whether to finance the film itself or license it again. Cassavetes remains a candidate to direct, Arad said.

And, she adds, “I never pictured myself in a leather suit. Who does?”

Batman Begins Repeats First Place

by SuperHeroHype

The Hollywood Reporter says that three new releases couldn’t bump Batman Begins from the top spot of the preliminary national DVD sales chart for the week ending October 30.

“Herbie: Fully Loaded,” “House of Wax” and “Bewitched” finished second, third and fourth respectively on VideoScan’s First Alert Chart.

“Herbie” did make a strong play, however, selling about 95% as many units as “Batman Begins.”

On trade publication Home Media Retailing’s video rental chart for the week ending October 30, “Bewitched” bowed at No. 1, while “Batman Begins” slipped to No. 2. “House of Wax” debuted at No. 3, while “Herbie: Fully Loaded” entered the chart at No. 5, right behind “Kingdom of Heaven,” which is still showing strong legs nearly three weeks after its release.

“Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith” will take over both the sales and rental charts this week.
