A long-awaited reunion between Matt Smith and his former Doctor Who companions is edging closer to reality, but it won’t involve a TARDIS. Instead of returning to the sci-fi series, Smith is in talks to join Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in a way fans might not have expected.
Former Doctor Who Matt Smith could join Karen Gillan on The Pondcast
Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Gillan and Darvill confirmed they have actively discussed booking Smith for The Pondcast (via Radio Times). Gillan declared, “We must get Matt Smith!” while Darvill added with confidence, “We will get Matt, and we have spoken to Matt about it.”
Smith played the Eleventh Doctor from 2010 to 2013, with Gillan and Darvill as his initial companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams. The trio’s on-screen chemistry helped define a golden era for the revived series, making a podcast conversation highly anticipated among fans.
Gillan noted that Smith “keeps saying he’s coming on” but admitted the team still needs to “lock it down.” The actors agreed that any recording with Smith would happen in person at Darvill’s house rather than remotely. “He said he’s up for it,” Darvill explained. Beyond Smith, Darvill has also reached out to Alex Kingston, who played River Song, the time-traveling daughter of Amy and Rory.
Steven Moffat, the former showrunner who oversaw Matt Smith’s entire tenure on Doctor Who, is already confirmed as a guest. Moffat also wrote episodes for multiple other Doctors, including Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Ncuti Gatwa. Kingston’s connection to the group looks intact, though no scheduling confirmation has been announced.
Gillan and Darvill stated that they have broader ambitions for The Pondcast too. Gillan suggested gathering “all the companions together” at some point, while Darvill joked that “no one would get a word in edgeways” unless they adopted a Hollywood Reporter roundtable format.
Since leaving Doctor Who, Matt Smith has starred in The Crown and House of the Dragon. With filming for the next season of House of the Dragon expected next year, finding time for a podcast recording could prove challenging.
