Writer Joe Kelly might be looking to shake up Spider-Man‘s status quo in the Marvel Universe in Amazing Spider-Man #1000. Spider-Man’s recent arc has seen him dealing with the emergence of May Parker’s son, Cormac Crane. The most recent issue, this month’s Amazing Spider-Man #999, saw that plotline close out. However, it also delivered some shocking news to Peter Parker: Aunt May has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital.
Aunt May’s sudden medical crisis could change Peter Parker’s future forever
As Peter Parker enters a new chapter in his comics saga, Marvel might be looking to kill off May Parker. Now, this won’t be the first time that Aunt May has been killed off in a Spider-Man story. This beat has been done in some of the biggest Spider-Man projects, including Insomniac’s Spider-Man video game and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Aunt May also famously passed in Amazing Spider-Man #400, which was considered a brilliant send-off to the character. Of course, this was revealed to be a ruse set up by Green Goblin, who had hired an actress to play May Parker.
Writer Joe Kelly revealed in an interview with The Popverse that he read through some of the biggest anniversary issues of Amazing Spider-Man in preparation for #1000. He said, “I looked at all the Spidey ones. I really was curious to see how they all played out. And it was interesting to see that there was kind of a balance of ‘let’s celebrate the character’ and also ‘let’s have a chapter.'” He continued, “I wanted to see if there was a way to merge those in our story. And I think we’ve done that.”
Should Kelly kill off Aunt May in #1000, Peter will enter a completely new era in the comics. Audiences have seen the deaths of loved ones affect Peter Parker profoundly, with the most influential moments in his story being the deaths of Ben Parker and Gwen Stacy.
With regard to his vision for the issue, Kelly stated it needed to be “a really big blowout that will be the next chapter of this kind of epic that we’re trying to weave.”
