The much-awaited Wolverine video game is promising to be a complete reinvention of the fan-favorite mutant hero, as revealed by the team behind the upcoming Insomniac IP. The minds behind the game recently provided an insight into what fans can expect from the PlayStation 5 exclusive, confirming that the feature wouldn’t simply rehash what fans know about the character from his big-screen appearances in X-Men movies.
Marvel’s Wolverine game will ‘explore a new version’ of Logan
While speaking with ScreenRant, Wolverine Game Director Mike Daly disclosed that the game will present Logan in a new light, before explaining the reason behind this massive creative decision.
“Unlike a lot of other mainstream superhero characters, Wolverine has been defined by a single iconic performance for over a decade now,” Daly said. “So one of the cool things that we realized very early on is that we were getting an opportunity to reintroduce the world of Wolverine for the first time, which does not come along very often. It was very rare. So we got to step back and really explore a new version of Wolverine.”
He added that the Wolverine game would build the mutant world “from the ground up,” which would allow players to experience something that is both “authentic and original.” As to why such a pivot is necessary, Daly noted, “If we adapted a story or an arc that people already knew, then they would not be getting that part of a great Wolverine story. So finding that original tale of trauma and history and mystery that we were going to be able to develop and flesh out with Liam [McIntyre].”
During the interview, Narrative Director Walt Williams took the time to thank Marvel for allowing the team to “build original stories.” He added, “They encourage it. It’s as long as we’re staying true to the characters, the situations can change, and we can make it our own.”
Marvel’s Wolverine game, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, is on track to hit the PlayStation 5 shelves on September 15, 2026.
