Gundam Breaks a 47-Year-Old Rule Ahead of Sydney Sweeney’s Netflix Movie

The Gundam anime is set to break a sacred 47-year-old rule with the release of its new series. This comes ahead of the live-action Netflix Gundam movie, which features Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo in lead roles. Gundam is one of the most popular and iconic franchises, debuting in 1979 and created by Yoshiyuki Tomino.

The Gundam anime is returning with a brand new series titled Gundam RG XARX-ZERO in 2027. However, this time the anime is straying from a 47-year-old rule it has followed. Fans will see aliens enter the franchise as villains.

The anime has generally centered around conflicts within humanity. But director Kenji Kamiyama recently revealed the reason behind introducing extraterrestrial antagonists. Kamiyama explained that they decided to introduce aliens into the anime because they would pose a greater threat than any human. Moreover, since the new anime is releasing alongside the game Rogue Orbit, an alien enemy would be “easy to understand” for players (via IGN).

According to PR Newswire, RG XARX-ZERO is set 100 years before the events of Rogue Orbit. The game will continue the story a century later, building on the threats present in the anime and the events that took place. Kamiyama also revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con that he struggled with ideas when he was approached “with the idea of creating a Gundam set in an entirely new timeline, one that is neither the Universal Century nor the Common Era.”

However, the questions were hindering his enthusiasm for working on the project. Hence, Kamiyama reminded himself of his love for the series. This led to the birth of “a fresh and unexpected Gundam.”

Apart from the anime, the Gundam live-action with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo is also expected to drop in 2027.
