Netflix and the creators of Stranger Things have weighed in on one of the series’ most persistent fan theories following the season five finale. The speculation, centered around the existence of a secret ninth episode, gained widespread attention under the viral “Conformity Gate” label.
Netflix turns down a Stranger Things’ ‘Conformity Gate’ Episode 9 theory
Netflix has officially denied the viral “Conformity Gate” theory, which suggests a secret ninth episode of Stranger Things season five. On January 7, the bios of all official Stranger Things social media accounts were updated to state: “ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING.” This update served as confirmation that the series concluded with episode eight.
The theory gained momentum after users noted that typing “fake ending” into Netflix’s search bar returned Stranger Things as a top result. Fans speculated that episode eight was a misdirect and that a secret episode would drop on January 7. However, no such episode was released, and Netflix’s update quelled speculation.
Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, addressed the ending in a January 6 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “They really left nothing more to be told.” He added, “I remember crying a lot at the final table read… I just think it was perfect.” This aligns with Matt Duffer’s comments explaining Eleven’s ambiguous fate: “The characters can’t know and the audience can’t know because then it puts Eleven in danger and her sacrifice was for nothing.”
Matt Duffer also confirmed that upcoming spin-offs will not include returning cast members. He told Variety, “No common characters. We’re actually really excited… completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology.” A new live-action series is in development and will address the origins of Vecna and the Mind Flayer. “It’s very fresh and very new,” said Matt. “But yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining.”
Netflix will release Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 later this year, set between seasons two and three. The platform will also debut a behind-the-scenes documentary, One Last Adventure, on January 12.
