Star Wars: Ahsoka’s 1 Major Jedi Storyline Criticized by Rebels Writer

Henry Gilroy has addressed one of Ahsoka’s most debated story decisions after the series’ first season. The Rebels writer and executive producer explained why he disagreed with a major character direction. He noted that the concept had been considered and dismissed during the development of the animated series.

Henry Gilroy discusses Sabine’s Jedi training storyline in Star Wars: Ahsoka

Henry Gilroy discussed Sabine Wren’s Jedi training storyline during an appearance on the Pod of Rebellion podcast.

Gilroy said, “It was absolutely not the plan… we really felt that not only did it step on Ezra’s story… it was a weak retread, we already did this.” He described the idea of Sabine developing Force sensitivity as “overkill.” Gilroy shared, “The idea of Sabine training as a Jedi when she is already this fantastic warrior of her own type, we felt like, ‘This is overkill.’”

Gilroy said the intention in Rebels was reflected in Sabine’s arc involving the Darksaber. He stated that the storyline “shows you do not have to be a Jedi to have Jedi ideals and embrace the Jedi philosophy.” He noted that Sabine trained to wield the weapon but ultimately passed it to others who led Mandalore.

Gilroy clarified that he had no involvement with Ahsoka. “I had nothing to do with the Ahsoka series, so I was shocked,” he said about Sabine becoming Ahsoka’s Padawan. Sabine begins incomplete training under Ahsoka Tano after the events of Rebels and works through difficulties connecting with the Force. She later achieves a Force push that sends Ezra forward in the finale.

Gilroy confirmed that early discussions about Sabine becoming a Jedi occurred in season three of Rebels. “Not only did it step on Ezra’s story but it was a retreat of, okay, we already did this.”

He said the writers decided the concept “was a bad idea,” reflecting their stance during the animated series’ development. This remark highlights how the approach in Ahsoka differed from the original plans for the character.
