James Gunn on Why Superman Might Kill People in Future DCU Movies

James Gunn recently spoke about why David Corenswet’s Superman could kill people in future DCU movies, similar to how Zack Snyder’s Superman killed General Zod in 2013’s Man of Steel. Gunn’s new Superman movie has already received positive reviews from critics and fans. The film features an ensemble cast of stars including Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and more.

James Gunn isn’t a ‘purist’ when it comes to Superman not killing anyone

Director James Gunn, along with stars Rachel Brosnahan, David Corenswet, and Nicholas Hoult, attended a Wired Q&A, where he spoke about whether the new Superman will kill in the future.

Gunn pulled out a question card that read “Why doesn’t Superman kill?” and handed it over to Corenswet. Answering the question, Gunn asserted, “I believe he believes in a basic right to life. I mean, I think that’s just not in him.” However, Gunn also added that he isn’t a “purist” when it comes to the idea of Superman killing and stated, “I think that if, for instance, he had to kill to protect somebody’s life, he would probably do that, even though that would be hard for him.”

This would be similar to Henry Cavill’s Superman killing General Zod in Zack Snyder’s 2013 movie Man of Steel. While defending that scene during an interview with GQ last year, Snyder said that Zod wasn’t going to stop wreaking havoc and “would fight” Superman until either he killed him or Zod killed Superman. Snyder added that if “Superman can’t handle that position,” then people would’ve believed that “he’s fake.” The director stated that Superman had “to address the scenarios that come to him” and he had no options to “pick and choose” from “when something is outside of your morality.”

In a previous interview, Corenswet also conveyed that he would love to see his Superman appear in R-rated settings in the future.
