Venom’s Tom Hardy on Spider-Man Crossover: ‘We Got Close’

Even though Tom Hardy has effectively exited Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, he has come out to shed light on the much-discussed crossover between Tom Holland’s web-slinger and his rendition of Venom. Hardy first donned the mantle of Eddie Brock in 2018’s Venom before reprising the role in two subsequent sequels, as well as a mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Despite fans’ positive response to his take on the renowned anti-hero, the actor decided to call it quits on his stint with Marvel after Venom 3. Hardy has now shared his thoughts regarding what could’ve been with the theatrical representation of two of the most iconic characters in comic book history.

Tom Hardy on how close Sony got for a Venom and Spider-Man crossover

In a recent discussion, Tom Hardy disclosed that Sony and Marvel Studios came extremely close to sanctioning a crossover between Venom and Spider-Man. However, the plan ultimately faltered.

While talking to The Discourse Podcast host Mike DeAngelo about his latest crime series, MobLand, the Dunkirk actor seemingly indicated that studio politics were the reason behind fans not being able to see his Eddie Brock interact with Holland’s Peter Parker on the big screen. “We got close. We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun,” he noted.

When he was asked if it was studio politics that deterred a Venom and Spider-Man crossover from happening, he said it didn’t happen “for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”

He highlighted the importance of a Venom and Spider-Man crossover and how it would’ve been an exciting experience for children. “Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids,” Hardy remarked. He then added, “As much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”

While Hardy’s Venom may have departed the scene, Tom Holland is officially stepping into the shoes of Peter Parker once again with Spider-Man 4, which is currently on track to hit theatres on July 31, 2026.
