During the Emmy Awards, fans got their first look at Peacemaker in a sizzle reel for HBO Max’s upcoming programming slate. While DC FanDome will likely debut more footage, a few members of the press saw a lot more at a Television Critics Association panel. During the event, HBO Max offered an early glimpse at the series first full trailer. Writer/director James Gunn and star John Cena were also on hand to tease what’s ahead.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn explained why he chose Cena’s jingoistic anti-hero from The Suicide Squad to headline his own spinoff. Apparently, it all boils down to how much he has left to learn about being a bona fide superhero.
“At the end of The Suicide Squad, [Idris Elba’s] Bloodsport learns a lot,” explained Gunn. “He’s a better person than he was at the beginning. A lot of the characters are much better than they were at the beginning, and Peacemaker has a lot to learn. It’s that ability to learn that for me makes him a little bit more likable. His blindspots in some places are pretty terrible, and in some places are him being ignorant. I think that’s an important distinction to make as well. He is open at the same time, sometimes.”
According to THR, the trailer featured new looks at Peacemaker’s “disapproving father” and highlighted some additional banter between Cena and other characters, including Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt. We can also expect to see more of Cena dressed in nothing but his skivvies.
“One: [Gunn is] obsessed with my tighty whities and Two: He likes to see me dancing around,” said Cena.
Peacemaker will premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.
