Sonic Runs Rings Around Birds of Prey At the Weekend Box Office

There’s a new box office champion this weekend: Sonic the Hedgehog! Via Deadline, Sonic earned $58 million over the weekend and it’s projected to hit $70 million through Monday.  This also means that Sonic the Hedgehog has dethroned Detective Pikachu for the highest opening weekend box office for a video game adaptation. Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey fell to #2 with $17.1 million and $19.6 million through the holiday. The current domestic total for Birds of Prey is $61.7 million, and it’s unclear if the film’s long term legs will hold up.

Fantasy Island debuted at #3 with $12.4 million over the weekend and $14 million through Monday. In fourth place, The Photograph had similar numbers at $12.6 million/$13.8 million. Meanwhile, Bad Boys For Life landed in fifth place with $5.5 million/$12.5 million over the same period.

1917 landed in the number six slot with $7.8 million/$9.06 million Jumanji: The Next Level following at #7 with $6.7 million/$8.4 million. Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle reboot had $6.2 million/$8 million. Additionally, Best Picture winner Parasite got an Oscar boost at #9 with $5.5 million/$6.47 million. Rounding out the top 10 was Downhill, with $5.3 million/$5.98 million.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Sonic will likely hold on over box office newcomers Brahms: The Boy II and The Call of the Wild. Whether Birds of Prey can stay on #2 remains to be seen.
