Guardians of the Galaxy’s Yondu is Getting His Own Comic

He’s Mary Poppins, y’all! Guardians of the Galaxy’s fan favorite scavenger, Yondu Udonta will soon get his own Marvel comic series. Writers Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson will team up with artist John McCrea for the series; which will launch in November.

ComicBook.com posted first details about the series, and featured the creative team’s explanations about why they took on the book.

“Yondu is such a unique character because so many readers know him from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and yet his story is almost completely undefined in the comics,” said Nadler. “He’s a blank slate. We took this as a golden opportunity to simultaneously show readers who Yondu is at his core, while also exploring the criminal underbelly of the greater Marvel cosmos”.

But on top of that, the team wants to do something inventive with the character.

“Yondu is the opportunity to do something completely different for Lonnie and myself,” added Thompson. “We’re giving readers a street-level space book within the cosmic Marvel Universe. Yondu is filled with jokes on every page…However, we wanted to bring a depth to Yondu that readers will appreciate. There’s a lot in this book that’s completely new. New planets, new reveals, new characters, and new adventures. Yondu is carving out a brand new pocket of Marvel cosmic and he’s leaving a trail of destruction wherever he goes.”

The writers also praised McCrea’s artwork on the series, as well as his history in the medium.

“We are such big fans of his work on books like Hitman and The Boys, and getting to collaborate with a veteran like John is a pipe dream realized. He’s augmenting our story on every single page,” said Nadler.

Yondu was originally introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1968 alongside the first incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, James Gunn greatly re-imagined the character for the MCU. Subsequently, Marvel introduced a present day incarnation of Yondu who shared his counterpart’s personality. He may also be the direct ancestor of the Yondu who lives in the future alongside the original Guardians.
