The New Mutants Reshoots Have Yet To Occur

It’s been one of the most talked-about and delayed projects of the past few years, and while reshoots were expected to occur late last year, additional shooting on the upcoming X-Men spinoff The New Mutants has actually not taken place yet, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Reshoots were originally ordered by Fox to try and expand on the positive feedback to the horror elements in the first trailer. They were slated to film again in September 2018 for an August 2, 2019 release date, but without the additional production scheduled the film’s release date has been left in limbo. Sources say that the decision to move forward with the reshoots lay in writer/director Josh Boone’s hands.

Some have been questioning whether the film will even receive a theatrical release. Given Disney’s acquisition of Fox, rumors are circulating that the film may hold its premiere on Disney+ or Hulu rather than a traditional theatrical release. This would align with Marvel’s growing relationship with Hulu after the streaming service ordered four original animated series from the company, as well as talks of them reviving all of the Marvel series Netflix has cancelled.

The film is currently set to star Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) heavily rumored to play Sunspot, and Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s Daredevil) also rumored to join the cast. Nat Wolff was linked to the role of Cannonball but that casting has apparently fallen through, as has James McAvoy making an appearance as Charles Xavier.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic and Cannonball facing Demon Bear.
