Derek Mears and Andy Bean Confirmed for Swamp Thing

After weeks of rumors, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Derek Mears will headline DC Universe’s Swamp Thing series. Additionally, the studio has announced that Andy Bean will be playing the title character’s human alter ego, Dr. Alec Holland.

In the comics, Holland was a scientist who worked with his wife, Linda, to create a bio-restorative formula. The formula was designed to help other nations solve their food shortage crises. After his laboratory was bombed, Alec was drenched in the formula, causing the surrounding swamp to absorb his consciousness and memories. The plant life subsequently assumed a humanoid shape, and Swamp Thing was born. The series will also feature Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, Swamp Thing’s lover and partner. For this series, Abby is tasked with investigating “a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana.” That paves the way for Abby to discover the swamp’s “mystical and terrifying secrets.”

Mears’ involvement with the series was first reported back in September, but it wasn’t verified until now. Mears has made a name for himself playing monstrous characters in movies and TV. His list of roles includes a Kree warrior on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., one of the Predators in the 2010 film produced by Robert Rodriguez, and Jason Voorhees in the 2009 Friday the 13th remake. Bean was a regular on the Starz series Power and he was also featured in the HBO series Here and Now. Next year, Bean will appear in It: Chapter Two as the grown-up Stanley Uris.
