Batman v Superman Production Designer Talks Doomsday Origins

Batman v Superman production designer talks Doomsday’s origin in the film

Noted production designer Patrick Tatopoulos knows a thing or two about monsters, having designed creatures for the likes of Independence Day, Godzilla, Pitch Black, and the Underworld movies. Now he is turning his attention to Doomsday, one of Superman’s deadliest foes, who faces off against the Man of Steel, the Caped Crusader and Princess Diana in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he gave French Premiere (via Cosmic Book News) new details on the creature’s origins.

“Doomsday is an evolution essentially… Fans may be aware of the ‘Death of Superman’ story, but this is handled in such a new way,” said Tatopoulos. “When the film is called ‘Batman v Superman’ it really has a lot of levels to the meaning. Superman isn’t just killed off at the end of something. We see how he evolves as part of Lex’s plan to protect the world. Seeing the Superman we know, be gone, and then replaced with this reproduction is really going to make fans think of how we look at these super beings. It was especially interesting to figure out, how would you create Superman from Zod… then how would that involve into Doomsday.”

Those worried that the recent trailer revealing the power battle with Doomsday revealed too much need not worry as Tatopoulos explained that there’s a “larger threat” at play, one that he is likely familiar with as he’s also designing 2017’s The Justice League Part One for Snyder as well.

“The timeframe of how things fall into place will surprise fans,” added Tatopoulos. “Doomsday isn’t just the final act. Those feeling they may know too much this early are going to be in for a true surprise.”

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, joined by Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman.

Warner Bros. Pictures will release Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in theaters on March 25, 2016.
