Joel Kinnaman Talks Playing Rick Flag in Suicide Squad

Though they’re a team comprised of super villains, the only trouble that has fallen on the upcoming Suicide Squad film so far is the casting of Rick Flag, a role originally set for Tom Hardy who dropped out, then passed on by Jake Gyllenhaal, until finally Joel Kinnaman stepped in.

Speaking with UPROXX, Kinnaman opened up about what went wrong with last year’s RoboCop and relayed how playing the character of Rick Flag will be different without the fan expectation being present.

“You want the backstory of the character, but I think this is also a universe that David Ayer is going to create – there’s a lot more. Also, when you’re doing the first movie in a comic book, you always have the leeway of you’re going to move it from a comic book to a film and put it in real life – you’re always going to make a lot of changes and create a new universe. So you’re kind of setting a precedent. When you’re remaking a movie that’s already been made and a character that was made for the film, then it becomes a different thing and it’s more difficult to create something new without offending some people.”

Written and directed by Fury and End of Watch‘s David Ayer, Suicide Squad is set to also star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film will hit theaters on August 5, 2016.

Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the group was retooled into its current iteration as villains working off their sentence by John Ostrander. The team has included countless DC villains (and heroes) among its ranks throughout the years. It’s also been a staple of recent DC media, “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team.
