Xbox’s video game adaptations like Halo, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, and more are likely to get new movie and TV adaptations soon. All of these franchises are owned by Microsoft, which has recently started to lean into adaptations of its gaming properties. The latest development arrives following the success of several video game adaptations on the small screen, including those from PlayStation.
A new report from Puck has revealed that Microsoft has been pitching several Hollywood studios on the rights to develop adaptations of its gaming properties. The report suggests that the package, which includes over a dozen franchises, could be headed for a single network or streaming service. The report also reveals that Netflix, Paramount, and Universal are among those considering signing the deal.
Halo was previously turned into a live-action TV show that ran for two seasons
There have been several adaptations of Microsoft’s gaming properties already. The most recent examples include Halo, Fallout, and A Minecraft Movie. Halo, which remains one of the core defining gaming franchises for Xbox, was adapted into a TV series on Paramount+ that ran for two seasons. Unfortunately, the series was canceled in 2024. Elsewhere, two seasons of Fallout have already been released to critical acclaim on Prime Video, with more on the way.
At the time of writing, several adaptations of other Xbox franchises are already in development. A live-action feature film adaptation of Gears of War focusing on the origin of the Delta squad is currently in development at Netflix. The streamer is also developing an animated series.
Likewise, a Call of Duty movie has also been announced, to be written by Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan and directed by Peter Berg. A Minecraft Movie: Squared is also scheduled to release in 2027. Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton will produce a Sea of Thieves film.
It remains to be seen when and where Xbox’s gaming franchises will be adapted.
